What is SIP? SIP can be generally defined as a Voice over IP (“VoIP”) signaling protocol that is the de-facto standard for establishing voice sessions over an IP based network. SIP trunks are used to “carry” VoIP calls across an IP network. In IP Telephony SIP trunks replace legacy TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) and fixed line circuits used in the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) for the establishment and transmission of voice communications.
